“There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither” –…
A well-known fact is that a student who is brilliant can shine anywhere and it doesn’t matter what university they were at! However, joining the right university is certain to play its part toward a successful career.
India has a number of colleges and universities that promise to offer the best of education. But, what is best for one student may not be so for another. So, in order to find a university that is perfect for you, you need to do a lot, and we mean a lot of research before making this crucial decision. Here’s what you can do:
The first step of course is to come to a decision about the course you wish to pursue. Once you know this, you can start looking at the universities that offer the course you are looking for. For choosing the discipline, you can either go for a subject you are passionate about or you could look at what prospects each course offers later in life.
Make a list
Start by listing out all the universities that you feel would suit your needs. This is the initial stage of the decision, so you can make a big list. Don’t unnecessarily write down university names, but make sure that you are happy with the ones you have listed.
Check the eligibility
Before you start crossing off the universities from your list, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for the universities you prefer, and only then remove the ones that you don’t.
Think about the location
The next step should be to cross those universities off the list that are located in states or areas that are inconvenient for you. Instead, look not just for a city that is convenient for you, but also one that is safe for students and offers you great exposure, culturally as well as academically. On the other hand, if you are ready to do some hard work in travelling, you may leave this step for the end in your decision-making process.
The next thing to do would be to compare the facilities being offered by the universities that remain on your list. Check the infrastructure – libraries, labs, buildings, classrooms, hostels, etc.; do some research about the faculty; check placement records; and so on. Some will have what you need, while others won’t. For instance, Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab is well known for the high standard infrastructure they offer to their students, an even has an open air theatre to boot. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a university with top-notch research facilities, institutes like IIT Kanpur may be more to your liking.
While some universities may be absolutely perfect for your needs, they are not affordable. So, check the fee structure of the universities that remain on the list, and compare that to the facilities being offered. You could also look out for scholarship options offered by the universities.
Visit the campus
While an internet research is very helpful, you simply cannot make such an important decision without physically visiting the campus and seeing whether all is as it should be. Remember, campus photos on the internet may not tell the whole story.
Ask people about it
Alumni and present students have the inside scoop about the university you are considering. During your campus visit, talk to the faculty, the students, and everyone you can to know what they think about the institute. If need be, check on online forums as well; you are bound to get the most unbiased opinions in there.
Choosing the right college does not have to be as hard as people say it is. When you undertake these steps, the right decision will automatically follow.
